Rodent Treatments
-
Here is a checklist to tell if you have rats in your property:
- Loud scratching noises as rats scurry around under floorboards behind skirting’s and walls
- A very sharp distinctive ammonic smell
- Large dark droppings usually in clusters 9-15mm long
- Ripped food packaging/chewed plastics
- Nests and nesting material wood shavings/cardboard/plastic bags etc
- External burrows and decking make for ideal harbourage
We treat every problem seriously and will endeavour to treat the rat infestation with the utmost urgency and hope to resolve the problem as quickly and efficiently as possible. We do not as a rule use rodenticides internally as this can pose more problems than intended with regards to decomposing bodies and smells. Our treatments are individually tailored to the needs of the client and their requirements, so feel free to phone one of our BPCA qualified technicians for further advice.
The common rat is also known as the brown rat, its scientific (Latin) name is "Rattus norvegicus".
It has grey/brown markings, but is slightly lighter underneath. The common rat lives just about anywhere, but very often close to where humans are, surviving on our waste products. In cases of high infestation, the signs that rats are present are fairly obvious. Numerous droppings will be present also items in the area will have been chewed as the rats sample their surroundings looking for food.
Rats are exceptionally talented at entering buildings, and have been known to chew their way through concrete, very often holes will be found around the edges of concrete floors etc where the rats have burrowed underneath (a nice, ready made DRY home).
The Black rat is far less common and restricted to 3 major ports. Its appearance is sleeker with brown/black fur, large hairless ears and a tail, which is longer than its head and body. This enables it to be very agile and an excellent climber which gives rise to its other name "Roof Rat".
Rats are not long lived animals and in general survive for 10-15 months, but their ability to reproduce in high numbers keeps the population high in numbers.
Rats can cause severe damage to their surroundings by destruction through chewing and also the disease risk which they carry is a another reason for control. If you have a rat problem, don't leave it and hope that it will go away, it won't!
